Kay Rasmussen

Obituary

KAY LENORE RASMUSSEN Kay Lenore Rasmussen, of La Grange, Illinois, and formerly Jerseyville, Illinois, was called home on May 11, 2013. Kay was born in 1936, to Anita and Hobart Henderson, of Jerseyville, Illinois. Kay loved her home town of Jerseyville, and enjoyed spending time with her sister, Carol, her cousin, Helen, and many relatives. Kay attended Illinois Wesleyan College, and obtained a master 's degree in English and teaching, in 1960. Shortly after graduation, Kay moved to Chicago, and followed her passion of teaching to high school students at Proviso East High School, in Maywood Illinois. There she met Charles "Chuck" Rasmussen, a fellow teacher, and they were married in 1967. Kay and Chuck moved to La Grange, Illinois, and raised three active little boys. Kay continued teaching, but decided to stay at home to raise her three sons. She enjoyed her neighborhood friends and her beloved town of La Grange, watching her kids sporting events and enjoying the neighborhood. Kay had many passions in life, such as being an activist in the community, fighting for the needs of less fortunate, or advocating for a cause she felt strongly about. Her independent and strong personality is what made her successful in advocacy for others, and she never gave up trying to make the world a better place. She is survived by her three children, Charles, John (Holly), and David (Nancy); five grandchildren, Andrew (Samantha), Jessica, Michael, Cara, and Grant; and one great granddaughter, Clover, one sister, Carol (Peter), a nephew, Norbert (Alexia), and her cousin, Helen (Jesse). She was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, and her parents. Amongst those surviving her, several have enjoyed the animated, deep discussions that Kay would have regarding anything from the "Old Trains", to the current political happenings, to the workers in China. There wasn 't a topic that Kay did not enjoy having a conversation around. A memorial service will be held at Plymouth Place, in La Grange, on Saturday, June 29th, 2013, at 10:00 am. A reception will immediately follow at Sabans restaurant in Countryside. Kay will be deeply missed by many who loved her, and we hope you will share in celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, at http://www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org/donate on behalf of Kay Rasmussen.

"This page was copied from another site and pasted here without formatting. It was originally composed for the benefit of my grandchildren.

We have Kay to thank for the content on this page. She spent several days, perhaps weeks, doing research at various places, including the Greene County Historical library and searching the archives at Illinois College. She shared some of her research with me and, due to her findings, I was able to locate the homestead of our grandfather, the pioneer, James Henderson. He had settled on land south of Whitehall, IL., near the center of Greene County - the first to settle north of Apple Creek. He remained on the homestead until his death and is interred there, but the older children moved to and settled in and around Greenfield, IL.. Other children moved farther north and some moved on to the west as the frontier opened.

She also provided newspaper archives of interest to our families and the book written by L P Allen (grandson of James & Mary Henderson), which records the older generations and their movement. If you are not acquainted with the L P Allen paperback, check with Helen or Carol. Although it may be technically inadequate, I have published the book and you may access it on this page. A second book of "sketches" was also given to me. I hope to "read' that book into a composer and, as such, make it available for our families.

I will miss the occasional visits with Kay, both those in person and those by long distance! Her love, consideration and generosity for others was again experienced as we gathered in her remembrance at the lodge October 13, 2013.

Susie and I appreciate being included  in that celebration of her life, Thank You!"
