Ralph M. Metcalf is now a lieutenant commander in the U. S. Navy.
He is on submarine duty in the Pacific and was recently given
recognitions for having taken over command of the submarine in the
absence of the skipper.
Mrs. Metcalf and daughter are staying here with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Peter J Achenbach.

Lt. Comm. Ralph Marion Metcalf was awarded the Navy Cross.
Admiral Lockhart presented the cross and Admiral Nimitz of the
Pacific command signed the citation. The President of the United
States authorized this decoration to any person while serving in any
capacity with the naval service of the United States, distinguished
himself by extraordinary heroism in connection with military
operations against an armed enemy."
