RALPH METCALF DIES AT HOME IN GREENFIELD
 
Greenfield. Feb. 16.—Ralph Metcalf, former banker and public official, and the oldest alumnus of the Greenfield High
school, died suddenly at his home here at 4 o'clock this afternoon.
Decedent: was born in Macoupin county, five miles east of here, Dec. 8, 1861, the son of Richard and Mary Buchanan
Metcalf. Following his graduation  from the local high school he taught school for a time.
He was connected with the First Nstional hank of this city the  last forty-seven years, serving as cashier, director, president.
He served on the official board of the Methodist Episcopal church many years, was at one time; treasurer of Rubicon Twp.,
and held high offices in various fraternal orders. He was a past worshipful master of the Greenfield masonic lodge and a
member of the Carrollton commandery of Knights Templar.
Mr. Metcalf was active in war work during the world war and did much to carry on Liberty Loan drives. In 1918 he was
appointed food administrstor by President Hoover, then head of food administration for the nation. Mr. Metcalf 's
wife, whom he married in 1861, died in 1921. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. K. T. Smith, and a son, Merrill, both of Greenfield. A brother, E. K Metcalf of Greenfield, and three grandchildren also survive.
  Funeral services will be held at the residence at 1:30 o'clock, Saturday  afternoon. Rev. J F Long will officiate. Interment

will be in Oakwood cemetery, this city.
